Bernardo Strozzi (1581 - 1644), San Gerolamo |
No, it's not all Mother Mary's and Baby Jesuses in Venice. During the classic age of Venetian painting, many artists liked to pay tribute to Saint Jerome, who in his spare time, that is, when not translating the Bible into Latin (creating the core of Latin Vulgate Bible), is said to have often contemplated mortality and the futility of clinging to the material world. These are from the collection at Ca' Rezzonico on the Grand Canal in Venice.
