Michael Nesmith's "Different Drum"
An admirably forthright take on "the break up song." And witty too. In a way he's saying "it's not you, it's me," but he's also saying "it is you" too. If you've only heard Linda Ronstadt's version of the Nesmith-composed classic, then what you are mostly going to hear is her amazing voice and the excellent melody. Hearing Nesmith sing it is surprising at first. It's bluesy and casual. But it wasn't until I heard this version that I really understood the song; really understood how good it is. Also: Exhibit A in making the case that the Monkees were actual musicians.
UPDATE: 7-12-25
Well, they took down the Nesmith performance I loved. So let's hear Tanya Donnelley's take on this killer tune. With strings!
