Where Thieves Do Not Break Through Nor Steal
As a holiday, Christmas is at once religious and thoroughly secular. To me, it works just fine as the latter. Sort of like Thanksgiving. A good excuse for businesses to shut down and for people to get together. That's enough reason to celebrate, right? That being said, I have always figured that if you do want to honor the Christian spiritual dimension of the day, one way to do it would be to go beyond the birth narrative and engage directly with the teachings of Jesus as found in the Sermon on the Mount, for example, Matthew 6:19-21.
19: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
