1. I wonder how much these mass shooters get intoxicated by the secret they are holding as they plan their atrocities? They must walk around thinking that no one knows it, but soon the whole Western world will be talking about me. They must get high on that.
2. It relates to the Superman complex which we often see with portrayals of serial killers, like Hannibal Lector, where they think they are above the petty morality that confines lesser beings, the herd-like masses. I think this guy thought he was pretty special, getting rich playing poker while all the losers out there are slogging 9 to 6 everyday.
3. The novelist Walter Kirn suggested the motivation might be even crasser. Just to set the record for the worst mass shooting.
4. At these times, people wonder why the NRA is so adamant that citizens should have access to assault weapons. I mean, they aren't needed for hunting or protecting one's home. Well, it's because there's a large group of people out there amassing huge arsenals because they are itching for a fight with the government, or with liberals, or with brown people. It's not they do this so they can act in self-defense if the government overreaches. No, they are hoping for a day when everything goes sideways and they'll be able to blow people away with impunity.
