The Cone of Uncertainty
We're following the path of Hurricane Dorian closely since we own a condo in South Beach. On maps the path is presented within what they call "the cone of uncertainty." For some reason I don't recall them using this terminology in the past. Did they just start using it? Maybe it's been there all along and I just noticed it now. That's the way life is. If I understand it, there is the main projected path and a cone that allows for variations, which present in decreasing degrees of likeliness. Seems like a good concept for life, doesn't it? We have a general direction in life that can veer suddenly in a new direction due to one of the biggies: divorce, cancer, involuntary career change, and so on. But even when we don't veer in a whole new direction there are smaller contingencies like a voluntary lateral move within your industry or moving from your old house to a new one in the same general vicinity. It's easy to picture oneself moving through one's days with that invisible cone of chance or possibility spreading out in front of you and to the sides, like water pushed from the prow of a ship.
