This Week In Single Metaphor Songs: "Mona Lisa"
Note, 2-10: YouTube just declared this video off limits. Will try to find an alternate version.
We were having dinner with friends and I weighed in with the not-so-startling opinion that Frank Sinatra is the greatest American popular singer of the 20th century. This was met with the response of, What about Nat King Cole? I had to admit that there is some merit there. No one sings better the Nat, but his repertoire ultimately settled into a fairly safe pop zone that featured syrupy arrangements that limited his impact artistically if not popularly. And of course he died young. But who would ever need to hear anyone else (yes, even Aaron Neville) sing this exemplar of the single metaphor genre? Yes, strings and all.
