Migrations, Instincts, and Us

I saw what I thought might be a monarch butterfly in our backyard a few days ago. And I thought about how incredible it is that by instinct they can travel thousands of miles to Mexico without having gone before. And then I saw on PBS a show about animal migrations, which showed how they are guided by something coded in. And I thought about how, since we are fundamentally the same as those creatures, there must something about human life that is also deeply instinctual. Sure, we need to make choices at the grocery store and think carefully about who we are going to marry and so on, but at some really deep level there must be something that is sort of mapped out.
